"It's not easy being green" kermit the frog ....
We know that for sure. It takes a while for humans to accept change. For us, the green building principles sounded great on paper but we knew it would be a tough pill to swallow for our clients, as many of the green elements would cost more.
It wasn't until we had the opportunity to fully utilize some really green methods and products that we saw first hand the difference going green can make.
Have you had the chance to stand in your attic in July in Atlanta? Well, if you survived it, you know how miserably hot it is. Now, consider if you were in a home that had used spray foam insulation, for the whole house. In this case, the ceiling of the attic is insulated. Surprise, it is actually comfortable up there; meaning that July heat did not get into the house. That is a huge and beneficial difference than the old way of doing things. And yes, it is more expensive up front. And like many things, the price is going down, as volume of use goes up. Love those capitalist economic principles.
Besides insulation, the 2 other elements of green buildling that we see the most benefit from are high efficiency windows and high efficiency HVAC systems. A new home built with these elements will be less expensive to run and will be more comfortable year round.
